Attahir Karief, his wife, and children fled Darfur on foot when the older child was only 6 and his wife was 9 months pregnant with their third child. They ran through the desert for 10 days before reaching Chad. They then persevered through years in a refugee camp in Ghana, cut off from contact with other family members and often with not enough food or medical care before arriving in Anchorage and beginning over.

SLEDDING at Russian Jack Springs Park - Monday, February 15, 2010, from 1 to 3 PM: The kids have the day off from school, so Anchorage Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is sponsoring a sledding event for Sudanese refugees and their children. The rest of the public is also VERY welcome. Hot chocolate and good times will abound. Gather at the sledding hill next to the park chalet. Access the chalet from Debarr between Bragaw and Boniface.
